Okuz Mehmet Pasa Caravansary

  /  Okuz Mehmet Pasa Caravansary

The caravansary is reminiscent of a medieval castle with its large inner courtyard surrounded by porticoes which is located near the port of Kusadasi and built by the Grand Vizier Okuz Mehmet Pasha in 1618. The mosque, school, bath, inn, bazaar, bakery, coffeehouse, houses, cellars, rooms, shops and the complex consisting of mills only mosques, inns and baths have survived. The caravansary has a large courtyard and rooms lined around this courtyard which looks like a small inner castle. We learn from Evliya Celebi Travel Book that there was a fountain in the middle of the courtyard and there was a masjid on it. The caravansary was also built to defend against the dangers that may come from the sea. And it passes in the Grand Vizier Damat Mehmet Pasha’s estate. During his lifetime Grand Vizier Damat Mehmet Pasha made a great contribution to the reconstruction of Kusadasi.

The two-storey caravansary hosts many cultural events throughout the year.
